Man Dies In Wrong-Way Crash On Long Island Highway

Emergency crews in Islip were called just after 10:30 p.m. with reports of a crash on the southbound Southern/Heckscher State Parkway between exits 44 and 45, according to State Police.

A preliminary investigation found that Roy Nelson, of Holbrook, was driving northbound in the southbound lanes when he struck a Tesla head on.

Nelson was taken to South Shore University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. The Tesla driver was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Troopers said Nelson may have suffered a medical emergency.

State Police said the crash is under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the agency at 631-756-3300.
